As the highly-skilled talent pool increasingly becomes occupied by Millennials, companies have wisened towards the effect of office space on productivity. Traditional office environments were never intended to kindle an essence of fun or culture within a business, they existed purely as a base for operations, where the basic requirements to conduct work responsibilities could be met. Now, as Managers become savvy to the benefits to productivity that an inspiring and innovative workspace can have, that’s all changing.
The remote-working misunderstanding
With an increased allowance of mobility owing to WiFi, ease-of-access to personal devices and co-working environments, a few years ago there was speculation surrounding the “death” of the office altogether. While this prediction was true in part as many businesses are now offering increased flexibility towards occasional home-working and hours, it certainly hasn’t been the case as far as office space is concerned. Quite the opposite in fact.
The office space has been reinvented to offer much more to workers than its older counterparts. Companies have quickly come to grips with how office space can positively impact employees and, as a result, are making changes to bolster employee experience and nurture ability. This is helping to encourage high production rates of quality work.
The changing face of office design
The most successful businesses who have harnessed this new style of employee-centred open-office are often those who look to their office space with multiple work styles in mind. Those are the businesses who look to empower and enable each task. This means that they invest in areas that are tailored to individual work, collaborative work, presentations, etc.
The good thing about this new style is that it allows employees the freedom to decide how they should conduct their work, and a means to alter their working style depending on their changing needs.
Are we witnessing the end of the traditional office desk?
New office design styles focus on providing inspiring and efficient creative workspaces that empower employees in a way that traditional cubicles or closed-offices never could. While there has been criticism over the suitability of creative open-office, this has largely naturally been distilled by the concept itself; the new style aims to cater for the most diverse range of working and so providing suitability is itself the ultimate aim.
Could this be the end of the traditional office desk? Modern office environments often make use of multi-functioning office furniture that can be altered depending on work-styles. While the traditional office itself may be disappearing and taking the solitary desk with it, that style of working is still very much in preference for many people. Therefore, it is certainly a work-style that will stay in the minds of those project managers.
